Summary:

The Communications Specialist will support the Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  This position requires strong writing skills and the ability to distill complex information into actionable messaging.

 

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Support STI-related communications through the development of messaging and materials (i.e. fact sheets, etc.).
  • Conduct research and develop and compile materials to explain CDC public health activities to the general public, community-based organizations, and clinical providers and to specific groups including legislative subcommittees, state policy makers; and other groups interested in specific program activities.
  • Submit into the e-clearance and STARRs systems requests for project determination and clearance and provide status updates regarding these requests, and follow-up with additional data if needed.
  • Provide branding and design services for recipient events that require posters, agendas, PowerPoint templates, etc. related to orientation meetings, pre-application workshops, jurisdictional meetings and program review meetings as noted in the Color schemes and graphic design options will come from the contractor.
  • Assist leadership with developing the design and formatting of PowerPoint presentations for major presentations to division staff and/or. Estimated up to three times per year and include up to 60 slides in each presentation.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong writing skills. Ability to translate complex public health information into plain language.
  • Able to provide consultation, technical assistance, and training on program and project implementation to internal and external groups.
  • Apply social marketing practices and health communication theories to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication in interpersonal exchanges.
  • Ability to work well independently, be solution-oriented, motivated, and committed to customer and company success.
  • Excellent judgment and decision making, with strong analytical skills.
  • Advanced use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, Health Education, Public Health, or related field or equivalent years of experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience writing and editing in Health Communications or Public Health Education.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous work experience in infectious diseases.
  • Prior experience working with the CDC is highly desired to understand the culture and environment.
